Jacques Vaché

Life: 1895– 1919

Style(s): Dadaism

Quote: “I wander from ruins to village with my monocle of Crystal and a disturbing theory of painting. I have been in turn a lionized author, a celebrated pornographic draftsman and a scandalous cubist painter. Now I am going to stay at home and let others explain and debate my personality in the light of the above mentioned indications.'' (4)

Fun Fact: He showed his angry response to his experiences as a WWI soldier in his art.  He was known as the patron saint of the Dadaist movement (2). He committed suicide in 1919 along with 4 others from the Dadaist movement (1)

Vaché was quite a character. You met him briefly and talked with him as he walked through the city. He told you that his art was meant to express his terrible experiences during World War I. Known as the patron saint of the Dadaist movement, (2) he had compiled a collection of outlandish works of art that were understood by few. He took pleasure in the fact that other artists viewed him as eccentric and would have long debates about him and his personality (4). However, along with three other Dadaist artists, he was unable to handle life and killed himself in 1919 (1). Right before he died, he suggested that you go talk to Tristan Tzara, the true founder of the Dada movement. He claimed to have met Tzara at the Cabaret Voltaire in Paris (3). Since Breton had also suggested that you talk to Tzara, you decide to go find him.
