Max Klinger Life: 1857 – 1920 (1) Country: Germany Style(s): Symbolism (painter/sculptor) Works: The
Plague (from “Vom Tode II” 1898-1909) "Ängste"
–Anxieties- (from "Ein Handschuh" -A Glove- 1881)
Philosopher (1888) Fun Fact: The ten etchings in the cycle "Paraphrase on the Finding of
a Glove" from 1881, anticipates both the fetish theory
of Freud and the psychedelic pictorial universe that emerged 90 years later--which actually was a kind of neo-jugend or "art
nouveau nouveau" (4). Klinger painted, etched, and sculpted.

“You
are “Yes,” you answer. “Well, what do you want?” “I was told you might know about my squirrel
Chucky. He was kidnapped and I need to find him, so I talked to Dali and then he told me about a friend who told me about
another friend and so on…and now I’m here cause he said that you might know about Chucky, and I really need him
back. He’s my whole life. I don’t have much time for friends or anything like that and he’s always been
there for me, and--” “Hold on,” Klinger said, putting
a hand on your shoulder, “just calm down. I don’t have your squirrel and I don’t know where he is. I have
no idea what you’re talking about. You must have been misled. I have no idea why you are here.” “Well, can’t you help me? I mean,
the note was about time and you’re an anti-realist so you know about time and stuff so can’t you help me?” “Listen, I am not a genius and I can’t
read minds. However, I do know a bit about how our minds work. Have you ever seen my cycle of engravings, “Paraphrase on the Finding of a Glove"? No? Well, it is a series of engravings about this other-worldly glove.
The glove and everything else in my paintings are symbolic. It shows the relationship between this world and other worlds
which might exist. It is very unrealistic; however, when Freud came out with his ideas decades later, people began to think
that my art might have something behind it (4). There are many things that are not obvious to the eye. Do you think that maybe
your kidnapper meant, perhaps, that he came through time to get your squirrel?” You step back, looking at him apprehensively,
suspiciously, “What are you talking about? Time travel is impossible. No one could come through time. It’s against
the laws of physics.” “Isn’t time relative to the observer?
Remember Einstein? But let’s not get into a discussion on physics. It would take all the time we have to carry out that
discussion. Depending, of course, on what time really is. But anyway, perhaps your kidnapper was saying that he is from the
past. After all, you believe that it is 1985 and I died in 1920. But your theory that it has something to do with art sounds
very realistic. Almost all ideas are shown in art long before they are shown in words; for example, look at my engravings
I mentioned earlier- they embody many of Freud’s ideas which he didn’t develop until decades later. Artists understand
things. That is why you are looking for your squirrel through us." “Anyway, you know I was the founder of
symbolism, right? Well, there is another symbolist, Odilon Redon, he’s French but he’s still an all-right guy
(3). You should look him up. If our ideas about artists are correct, then he might be able to help you.”
