Country: France

Style(s): Neoclassicism and Romanticism (2)

Bonaparte at the Bridge of Arcole (1796-1797)

        Sappho at Leucate (1801)

Napoleon on the Battlefield of Eylau (1808)

        L'Imperatrice Josephine (1809)

Fun Fact: In 1793, Napoleon appointed Gros to paint the battles as he followed Napoleon on his  grand campaigns.  The Battle of Eylau (1808) was one such painting.  However, Gros was haunted by the failure of his paintings after the Napoleonic era, and he drowned himself in the Seine. (2)

Antoine-Jean Gros. A French painter in both the neoclassical and romantic style (2), none of his works seem too uplifting or inspiring to you. However, at this point you’ll take what you can get as long as it will help you find Chucky. Gros claims not to know anything about the squirrel and tries to sidetrack you by telling you about 1793 when the great Napoleon Bonaparte appointed Gros to follow him and paint all of his battles, many of which later became famous. Unfortunately, after the Napoleonic era, Gros’ later paintings lost much of their value and inspiration, and became utter failures (2).

However, you beg and beg and so finally he admits that he was taught by Jacques-Louis David (1) and that he has heard that David probably has some involvement in the whole scheme. You thank Gros profusely and charge off to find your culprit.
